I did thirty-five (35) illustrations for the book; Eagle Vision (Return of the Hoop) authored by Ed (Eagleman) McGaa. Of all 311 pages in the book I could've done 300 illustrations. It was an easy task because I have lived through it.
Black Elk the famous Oglala holy man states in one of his prayers "the sacred hoop is broken" and "the people are scattered."
This story is short through all these years of experiencing discrimination and racism in this country I've proudly come to the realization that my hoop/our hoop (meaning our family) was never broken and it could be that the people directing their sub-standards at me and trying to get me to believe it are themselves victims of their own broken hoop.
The painting depicts the most sacred ceremony one of thanksgiving and preparation. Sharon & I both participate in the ceremony every summer. This particular piece happened in the early seventies.
The painting is of a Sun Dance that actually happened and it was the first time in this modern era that Lakota men & women walked into our sacred circle to sing and dance the ceremony. The return of the hoop became a reality.
